What are the causes of pericarditis?
idiopathic, viral, bacterial, fungal, myocardial infarction, dressers, drugs
what are the less common causes of pericarditis?
uraemia, RA, SLE, myxoedema, trauma, surgery, malignancy, radiotherapy, sarcoidosis
what are the viral causes of pericarditis?
Coxsackie, flu, Epstein-Barr, mumps, varicella, HIV
what are the bacterial causes of pericarditis?
pneumonia, rheumatic fever, TB, staphs, steps, MAI in HIV
what are the drug causes of pericarditis?
procainamide, hydralazine, penicillin, cromolyn sodium, isoniazid
what are clinical features of pericarditis?
- Central chest pain (worse on inspiration or lying flat +/- relief by sitting forward)
- Pericardial friction rub
- Evidence of pericardial effusion or cardiac tamponade
What investigations should be done in pericarditis?
ECG Bloods Viral serology and Blood cultures CXR Echo
what features may be present in the ECG of someone with pericarditis?
Saddle shape ST segment elevation but may be normal
what features may be present in the CXR of someone with pericarditis?
cardiomegaly
what features may be present in the Echo of someone with pericarditis?
pericardial effusion
What is the management of pericarditis?
Analgesia
Treat the cause - Antibiotics if bacterial
