Pericardial Disease Flashcards
what is myocarditis
inflammation of the myocardium
- aka muscles of the heart
what does myocarditis cause
degeneration and necrosis of myocytes
disruption of conduction
what causes myocarditis
viruses
- coxsackie A and B
what is the treatment for myocarditis
anti inflammatories
anti virals
heart transplant
what is pericarditis
inflammation of the pericardium which causes fluid to accumulate
what is the pericardium
tissue that surrounds the heart
how many layers is the pericardium
two layers w a small amount of fluid in between
what is a pericardial effusion
a build up of fluid in the pericardium
what is the purpose of the fluid in the pericardium
reduces friction when heart is beating
what is a complication of pericarditis
cardiac tamponade
what is cardiac tamponade
when the fluid surrounding the heart reaches 200 ml and compresses the heart and restricts its stretch and ability to fill with blood
- dec in cardiac output
what are signs of acute pericarditis
sharp chest pain that worsens with deep breath
fever
dyspnea
pericardial friction rub
ECG ST elevations
Becks triad
pulsus paradoxus
what are the s/s of cardiac tamponade
becks triad
- hypotension
- JVD
- muffled heart sound
what is pulsus paradoxus
a dec is systolic BP by about 10 mm Hg or more w inspiration
what is the treatment of pericarditis
NSAIDS
ASA
corticosteroids
colchicine –> when NSAIDs dont work
drain fluid
