Cardiac Aneurysms Flashcards
what is an aneurysm
an abnormality of the artery wall causing it to expand
what is the major cause of aneurysms
HTN
what happens w HTN that causes aneurysm
HTN causes an inc pressure on blood vessel wall
blood vessel walls become thicker and dilate
blood vessel bursts resulting in aneurysm
what can aneuyrsms cause
turbulent blood flow making them susceptible to rupture
what is heard with an aneurysm
bruit
where do most aneurysms occur
aorta
cerebral
what are the types of aneurysms
saccular
fusiform
pseduo
what are the common aneurysms
AAA
thoracic aortic
cerebral
dissecting aortic aneurysms
psuedo
berry
what is a saccular aneurysms
ballon shape w wide neck that occurs on one side of the artery
what is a fusiform aneurysm
around the entire circumference of vessel
- gradual and progressive
- interventions are case by case
what is a berry aneurysm
type of saccular with a small neck that are found at the bifurcations, still ballon shaped
- most common where anterior and posterios cerebral arteries come together at base of brain (circle of willis)
what is a false (pseudo) aneurysm
localized dissection or tear in the inner artery wall
- blood flowing between wall
- type of hematoma
- complications of vascular intervention procedures
what are the characteristics of the abdominal aortic aneurysm
bruit
pulsatile mass in abdomen w light palpation
* no deep palpation *
what is a complication of an AAA
rupture
what is a dissection aneurysm
blood within the layers that begins to tear away the layers of artery
