Performing CPR Flashcards
CPR is as simple as CAB-D! What is CAB-D?
Compressions- start chest compressions
Airway- if there something blocking air in the mouth, take it out
Breathing- if they are not breathing, do mouth to mouth
Defibrillation- if you started CPR, make sure help is coming with a defibrillator
Before starting CPR, what must you ALWAYS do?
Ask for consent, if they are unconscious, it is implied.
What is the purpose of compressions and rescue breaths?
Compressions force blood to flow through the body.
Rescue breaths provide oxygen to the lungs.
What is the ratio of compressions to rescue breaths?
30 compressions: 2 rescue breaths
When should you call 911?
If the person is not moving, not responsive and not breathing
What do you do if someone collapses?
- Check for hazards
- Assess responsiveness and check for breathing
- Call 911 or EMS, or have someone call for you
- Landmark for compressions
- Give chest compressions
- After 30, open the airway and use the head tilt, chin lift method
- Give two breaths if the person isn’t breathing
- Continue CPR until someone brings an AED, EMS takes over, you see signs of breathing, life or movement.
How do you check for responsiveness?
Tapping the person on the shoulders and shouting, “are you okay?”
What happens if the first breath doesn’t go in?
Reposition and try again. If it still doesn’t go in, return to chest compressions
When do you NOT do mouth to mouth?
If they have cold sores, etc, around their mouth, or if you are uncomfortable (if you don’t know the person or they have thrown up). You can use a pocket mask.
What could have happened if you hear a sudden gasp or sigh?
Cardiac Arrest- their heart has stopped working
