Performance Skills Flashcards
Performance skills - definition
- Observable elements of action that have an implicit functional purpose; they underlie the ability to participate in desired occupations and activities
- Divided into motor skills, process skills, and social interaction skills
Motor skills - definition
Occupational performance skills observed as the person interacts with and moves task objects and self around the task environment (eg, ADL motor skills, school motor skills, etc.)
Motor skills - list (not all inclusive)
- Aligns
- Bends
- Calibrates
- Coordinates
- Endures
- Flows
- Grips
- Lifts
- Manipulates
- Moves
- Paces
- Positions
- Reaches
- Stabilizes
- Transports
- Walks
Aligns (motor skill)
Interacts with task objects without persistent propping or leaning
Bends (motor skill)
Flexes/rotates trunk as appropriate to the task to grasp/place task objects out of reach or when sitting down
Calibrates (motor skill)
Using appropriate force, speed, or extent when interacting with task objects (ie, not crushing objects, pushing a door with enough force so it closes)
Coordinates (motor skill)
Using two or more body parts together to manipulate, hold, and/or stabilize task objects w/o fumbling or slipping
Endures (motor skill)
Persists & completes task w/o physical fatigue, pausing to rest, or stopping to catch breath
Flows (motor skill)
Using smooth and fluid arm/wrist movements when interacting with task objects
Grips (motor skill)
Effectively pinches/grasps objects such that they don’t slip (eg, from fingers, between teeth)
Lifts (motor skill)
Raising or lifting objects w/o evidence of increased effort
Manipulates (motor skill)
Using dexterous finger movements w/o fumbling (eg, manipulating buttons while buttoning shirt)
Moves (motor skill)
Pushing/pulling objects along supporting surface, pull to open or push to close doors and drawers, pushes wheels to propel wheelchair
Paces (motor skill)
Maintain consistent and effective rate of performance throughout entire task
Positions (motor skill)
Positions self an effective distance from objects w/o awkward body positioning
