Occupations - definition
Various kinds of life activities in which individuals, groups, or populations engage
What are the categories of occupation?
- Activities of daily living (ADLs)
- Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs)
- Rest and sleep
- Education
- Work
- Play
- Leisure
- Social Participation
ADLs - definition
- Activities oriented toward taking care of one’s own body.
- Fundamental to living in a social world; they enable basic survival and well-being.
- Also referred to as basic activities of daily living (BADLs) and personal activities of daily living (PADLs)
ADL - Bathing, showering
Obtaining and using supplies; soaping, rinsing, and drying body parts; maintaining bathing position; transferring to and from bathing positions
ADL - Toileting and toilet hygenie
Obtaining and using toiling supplies, managing clothing, maintaining toilleting position, transferring to and from toiling position, cleaning body, and caring for menstrual and continence needs
ADL - Dressing
Choosing clothing/accessories appropriate to time of day, weather, and occasion; obtaining clothing from storage area, dressing/undressing in sequential fashion, fastening/adjusting clothing and shoes; applying/removing personal devices, prosthetic devices, or splints
ADL - Swallowing/eating
Keeping/manipulating food or fluid in the mouth and swallowing it
ADL - Feeding
Setting up, arranging, and bringing food [or fluid] from the plate or cup to the mouth; sometimes called self-feeding
ADL - Functional mobility
- Moving from one position/place to another, such as in-bed mobility, wheelchair mobility, and transfers.
- Includes functional ambulation and transportation of objects.
ADL - personal device care
- Using, cleaning, and maintaining personal care items
- Hearing aids, glasses, orthotics, prosthetics, adaptive equipment, contraceptive and sexual devices, etc.
ADL - personal hygiene and grooming
- Obtaining and using supplies; removing body hair; using cosmetics
- Washing, drying, combing, styling, brushing, and trimming hair
- Flossing, brushing, deodorant, removing, cleaning, and reinserting dental orthotics and prosthetics
ADL - sexual activity
- Activities that result in sexual satisfaction and/or meet relational or reproductive needs
