Performance characteristics of materials Flashcards
What are the two different conductors?
Electric- allow flow of electrons through material.
Thermal- allow flow of heat energy through material.
What are the five types of strength and meaning?
Bending- resist beinbg bent
Compressive- withstand crushing
Tensile- resist stretching/pulling
Shear-resist sliding forces
Torsional- withstand twisting forces
Elasticity
Ability to be deformed and return to shape when force is removed.
Plasticity
Ability to be permanently deformed and retain that shape.
Malleability
Withstand deformation without cracking.
-increases with rising temperature.
Ductility
Stretching a material under tension; without cracking
Hardness
Ability to resist scratching
Toughness
Ability to absorb impact force without fracture.
Durability
Ability to withstand general wear over time.
Biodegrageability
Ability to naturally decompose.
