The 3rd Principal Part of a verb (amo, amare, AMAVI, amatus) is the 1st person singular of the Perfect Tense.
Got it? Ex: AMAVI, amavisti, amavit….
There are 3 tenses in the Perfect System. What are they?
perfect, pluperfect, future perfect
When do you use the perfect tense in the Perfect System?
When an action occurred at one point in the past. Ex: I ran.
How do you find the stem of an action verb in the Perfect System?
Take the “i” off of the 3rd Principal Part. Ex: amo, amare, AMAVI, amatus Take off the “i” in Amavi to make the stem amav. Then you can add any Perfect System ending.
In the Perfect System, what are the perfect tense endings?
i, isti, it, imus, istis, erunt
Translate amavi, amavisti, amavit, amavimus, amavistis, amaverunt
I loved, you loved, he/she/it loved, yall loved, they loved
In the Perfect System, what are the pluperfect tense endings?
eram, eras, erat, eramus, eratis, erant
Translate amaveram, amaveras, amaverat, amaveramus, amaveratis, amaverant
I had loved, you had loved, he/she/it had loved, we had loved, yall had loved, they had loved
What helping verb helps translate pluperfect tense verbs?
had ex: I had loved
When do we use the pluperfect tense?
When describing a past action completed before another past action. Ex: I had finished my homework when the bell rang. “I had finished” would be in the pluperfect tense. It happened before another past action, being the doorbell.
In the Perfect System, what are the future perfect tense endings?
ero, eris, erit, erimus, eritis, erint
Translate amavero, amaveris, amaverit, amaverimus, amaveritis, amaverint (notice the INT!)
I will have loved, you will have loved, h/s/i will have loved, we will have loved, yall will have loved, they will have loved
What helping verbs help translate the future perfect verbs?
will have ex: will have loved
How do we learn the perfect, pluperfect and future perfect forms of sum?
Add “fu’” to the endings!
In the Perfect System, what are the perfect forms of sum?
fu’-i, fu’-isti, fu’it, fu-imus, fu’-istis, fu’erunt. Do you see how the endings used in the perfect tense are the same in the perfect form of sum, it is just that “fu” have been added!
