Perception: Embodiment Flashcards
Embodiment, general
Cognitive representations are grounded in sensorimotor systems
Links between bodily states and abstract concepts
Metaphors are more than just linguistic devices
Concepts grounded in physical states
• weight : importance
• e.g. estimated value of foreign currency is depedent on weight of clipboard
Eskine et al: Taste and Morality
“sweet person”
• people who eat sweets or higher personality traits associated with “sweetness”
• Sweets are possibly associated with childhood
Fishy Smells
o people trust each other less when there is a faint fish smell
o also, once suspicion is created, people are able to detect fish smell more quickly
dirty hands, dirty mouths
e.g. working in office, find folder of competitor for promotion
o those who lied by voicemail had increased interest in mouthwash ads
• those who lied the email showed increased interest in hand sanitizer
Think outside of the box
o people physically inside of the box become less creative
Lean left/lean right
• balance board, lower estimates when leaning left
• related to number line -2, -1, 0, 1, 2

Embodied Cognition
*social-categorical knowledge across contexts is, in part, embodied
The same sensation can ground knowledge regarding different social groups by mapping different properties of those sensations on two distinct traits
Social categorization is embodied by means of perceptual symbols, rather than strictly through metaphor
The study suggests that person knowledge is itself based in the sensorimotor system, even for novel socially constructed categories
Conceptual Thought Theory
Perceptual Symbol Systems Theory
Conceptual Thought Theory
Concrete experiences are drawn upon to aid the comprehension of abstract concepts
Properties of the concrete domain are metaphorically mapped onto elements of an abstract domain
Since a concrete bodily sensation can be experienced directly, one does not need to draw on abstract domain for better comprehension
This predicts that a concrete experience can influence conceptual processing, but that exposure to an abstract concept will not influence sensation
*Hard ball influenced categorization of Republicans vs. Democrats
Perceptual Symbol Systems Theory
Social categories consist of multimodal states
Thinking of a social category consequently leads to a simulation of relevant sensorimotor states, contrary to previous limitations proposed by Conceptual Thought Theory
I.e., exposure to a concept can influence sensation
*ball felt harder or softer
