perception as a source of knowledge Flashcards
direct realism, indirect realism
direct realism
we immediately perceive mind independent objects
2 elements - perceiver- object being perceived
objects and properties of objects exist mind independently
2 elements of DR
the perceiver
the object being perceived
role of senses in DR
detect the physical world properties EX colour, shape etcd
do objects remain the SAME when unperceived DR
yes
EX an apple you left in a drawer for a day and forgot about will remain red and round
support for DR
in tune with common sense
avoids scepticism
explanatory power
explains why we perceive what we perceive
explains why we agree on what we perceive

issues with DR
subject to illusion - straw in glass EX
perceptual variation - perception changes depending on perceiving conditions
hallucination
time lag argument
indirect realism
we directly perceive sense data which is a representation of reality
material objects exist outside of the mind (realist)
DIFFERENCE between reality of objects + how they appear
3 elements - the object- the perceiver - appearance of the objects to the perceiver
