definition of knowledge Flashcards
the tripartite view
justified, true, belief
three types of knowledge
-propositional
-knowledge by acquaintance
-practical knowledge
propositional knowledge
-knowing that
factual knowledge can ALWAYS be expressed in language
EX Bob knows the man is the CEO of the shop
knowledge by acquaintance
-knowing of
Bob meets the CEO, he now knows the CEO
practical knowledge
-knowing how
Bob knows how to give an impressive handshake
necessary and sufficient conditions
conditions can be jointly suffice when combined with necessary conditions
EX an unmarried man is a bachelor as both are necessary conditions but are only sufficient when together
necessary condition
something you need in order to have the thing in question
EX water is a necessary condition of rain but not singularly suffice
sufficient condition
when met, mean you always then have the thing in question
EX when water is falling from the sky you have rain
necessary-water
necessary-from sky = jointly sufficient
can you have knowledge without belief?
yes, you can say I can see it is raining and therefore know it’s raining but I don’t have to believe it to be raining for it to be raining.
can you have knowledge without truth?
