perception and sensation/ visual perception Flashcards
sensory stimuli definition
the raw pieces of information that are detected by the five senses
sensation definition
the process of receiving and detecting raw sensory stimuli via sensory organs and sending this information to the brain
perception definition
the process of selecting organising and interpreting sensory information
three processes of perception
- selection
- organization
- interpretation
process of perceptions - selection
the process of attending to certain sensory stimuli, or features of certain stimulus, and excluding others.
process of perception- organisation
the process of regrouping selected features of sensory stimuli in order for them to be cohesively arranged
process of perception - interpretation
the process of understanding and assigning meaning to sensory information in order to understand it.
visual sensory system
the network that is involved in the sensation and perception of visual stimuli, including the eyes, the brain, and the neural pathways connecting them.
visual perception
the process of becoming consciously aware of visual stimuli as a result of the interactions between the visual sensory system, and the individual’s internal and external environments.
the three processes of visual perception
- selection
- organization
- interpretation
Visual perception - selection- feature detectors
feature detectors: specialised cells along the neural pathway connecting to, and found within, the primary visual cortex.
Visual perception- organisation
visual signals are regrouped and organised to reflect an image of reality
visual perception- interpretation
the primary visual cortex work with the brain areas to interpret and make sense of the visual stimuli.
bottom-up processing
perception is determined by incoming sensory information moving from specific information to general knowledge.
top- down processing
perception is driven by prior knowledge and expectations moving from general knowledge to specific stimulus information.
