perception Flashcards
Explain the basic concepts of sensation and perception Recognise and apply Gestalt laws Understand feature representation in the visual pathway Explain how bottom up and top down processing combine to enable visual perception Describe how perception aids in action
Define sensation
a passive process of brining information from the outside world into the body to the brain
Define perception
The active process of selection, organising and interpreting information brought into the brain
What are the gestalt laws of perception x4
Similarity - if elements look similar we perceive them as being of the same form
proximity - elements that are close together are perceived as belonging together
good continuation - lines move in a smooth course
closure - a boundary isn’t necessary for us to perceive a shape
What are the pregnant laws x3
Common fate - elements moving together are grouped together
symmetry - elements which are symmetrical are grouped together
parallelism - elements parallel are group together
What is the visual pathway
- ) light enters in the retina
- ) impulse is sent to ganglia cells in optic nerve
- ) information enters primary visual cortex
- ) information sent to secondary visual cortex and inferior temporal cortex
What stimuli do receptive field in V1 process
line stimuli
What stimuli do receptive field in V2 process
several lines combined forming corners
What do stimuli in the optic nerve process
circular stimuli
What form of processing is it in the visual pathway (bottom up / top down)
Bottom up
How does gestalt describe visual processing
Combination of elements in a scene to gain a holistic understanding of a scene, we use assumptions and knowledge about the world. This is a top down approach
Define top down processing
Our environment gives us clues when the stimulus is ambiguous
Define bottom up processing
perception. is conducted starting at the most basic units of a stimulus and adding parts together to understand and identify a whole object
