Conversational register/ tone initially- writing for himself almost an internal dialogue
reflected by use of discourse marker “so” used multiple times to start sentences in the first paragraph. Simple connective without much formality- no formality required. However this thins out as the text progresses perhaps alongside a growing realisation that this diary may become a primary historical source therefore causing the formality to increase subsequently using discourse markers such as the adverbial phrase of time “by this time”
