Peptic ulcer disease and gastritis Flashcards

Q
What is peptic ulcer disease and gastritis?
A
Peptic ulcer disease = disruption to the superficial epithelial mucosal lining of the stomach/duodenum more than 5mm in diameter, down to the muscularis mucosa
Erosions = small, superficial breaks in the mucosa alone
Result from an imbalance in protective and damaging factors
Gastritis = inflammation of the gastric mucosa
• Can be acute or chronic
• Acute phelgmonous gastritis = rare but severe infection involving the connective tissue layer, causing gangrene of the stomach
