People to Know 2 Flashcards
a freshman Republican congressman
who was elected to the House by the people of Long
Island, NY in November of 2022. Since his election it turns out the nearly EVERYTHING about his life is a complete lie. Among some of his lies are fabrications
about his heritage, educational and work background, and
even about the death of his mother. He also has a
criminal record in Brazil. Many want him to resign, but there is no indication that will occur.
George Santos
a Democratic congresswoman who
represents the 47th Congressional District which includes
portions of Southern Orange County. She won a very close
race last fall in what has long been a republican stronghold.
She is a former lawyer, earned lots of fans during her first
two terms for her willingness to take on big businesses in a
professorial manner. She announced on Tuesday that she
will be seeking to replace California State Senator Dianne
Feinstein in 2024.
Katie Porter
California’s senior senator. She
has been serving in the Senate since 1992. Now at age 89, she will be 91 when her current term ends,
and although she has not announced it yet, most
expect that she will not seek re-election. In recent
years there have been indications that the elderly
senator’s memory is fading a bit. Supporters argue
that her memory issues do not take away from her
legacy, she served as Mayor of San Francisco in the
seventies and eighties and has represented California
in the US Senate for 30 years. If she goes, many will
scramble for the safe democratic seat in the Senate.
Dianne Feinstein
selected by the slim
Republican majority in the House of you
Representatives as Speaker of the House for the
118th Congress. He who represents the
people of Bakersfield California, had a very
difficult time clinching the speaker’s gavel. He
was rejected by deeply conservative republicans
14 times (the most elections to select a SotH
since 1860) before finally receiving enough
votes. After each failed vote he made
concessions to garner more votes, leaving many
concerned about the direction of the current
congress. Nonetheless he is Speaker for
now, a job he has long desired.
Kevin McCarthy
formerly known
as Vladimir Gundyayeva has been the head of
the Russian Orthodox Church since 2009.
There are 110 million members of the Russian
Orthodox Church. He is a close ally of
Vladimir Putin and has been very supportive of
his reckless invasion of Ukraine. He told the
Russian people that soldiers who committed to
fighting against Ukraine would have their sins
washed away
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow
has been serving in the House of
Representatives since 1998. She serves in the 12
congressional district in California which lies in Oakland, one
of the most heavily democratic districts in the entire
country. She is the vice chair and a founding member of
the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. She has
mentioned running for Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat if she
should choose to not seek re-election in 2024.
Barbara Lee
became the President of Peru on December
7th, 2022, after President Pedro Castillo was impeached
and removed from office for attempting to dissolve
congress, a move that was seen as a coup attempt.
she, who served as First Vice President, became
president after Castillo’s ouster. Peru has been rocked by
protests and violent demonstrations for years and those
have not subsided since she took over, many want
her out as well. She is the first female President
of Peru and the sixth president in five years.
Dina Boularte
a Norwegian politician who has been
serving as the 13th secretary general of NATO since 2014.
NATO, an organization founded primarily by the United
States after WWII, was founded a way to counter the Soviet
Union following the war. The accusation that Ukraine was
joining NATO is part of what stoked the Russian invasion of
Ukraine in Feb. of 2022. Before serving as Secretary
he served as Prime Minister of Norway
from from 2000 to 2001, and again from 2005 until 2013.
Jens Stolenberg
the Democratic Governor of the State of
Arizona. She defeated Trump-loyalist Kari Lake in a very
close contest to become the first democratic Governor of
Arizona since 2009. Arizona has become a swing state in
recent years, Joe Biden’s victory in 2020 was the first
time a democrat has won the state since Bill Clinton. Prior
to being elected as Governor She served as Arizona
Secretary of State, where she was responsible for
certifying election results in the state.
Katie Hobbs
a 20-year-old climate activist
from Sweden. At 15 she was very concerned
with the impact that humans are having on climate,
so she began protesting outside of the Swedish
Parliament, she was soon joined by other young
people and her movement spread through Europe.
She has become a fierce environmentalist fighting
for changes that will help reduce the potential for
climate change. She was arrested yesterday at a
protest of German coal mines; she has already been
released. She has received many accolades for her
work, and has a long life of advocacy ahead of her.
Greta Thunberg
the Chief of Staff for President Joe
Biden since he was inaugurated in January of 2021, he was
also a key player on Biden’s campaign team as he sought
the presidency. He has an impressive DC resume, he
served as Chief of Staff for Biden when he was vice
president, and he was also COS for Vice President Al Gore.
He is stepping down from his post in the White House
after the State of the Union in a few weeks, this will be the
first major departure from the Biden team more than
halfway through his term. It is likely he will be involved in
Biden’s 2024 presidential campaign
Ron Klain
expected to replace Ron Klain as
President Joe Biden’s Chief of Staff in the coming
weeks. He oversaw the Biden administration’s
coronavirus response at the beginning of his term
and successfully rolled out the largest vaccine
program in the history the United States. He
doesn’t have a huge amount of political experience
and is taking over during a rough time in the Biden
White House. The Chief of Staff is an incredibly
important role in the White House, essentially the
person serving in this role essentially controls
access to the president.
Jeff Zients
has been the President of Turkey since
2014. In the nearly ten years that he has served
as president, Turkey has become increasingly less
democratic, as he as attempted to solidify his power.
His rule has been marked with increasing
authoritarianism, expansionism, censorship and
banning of parties or dissent. In 2016 he “survived a
coup attempt”, which only led to more power grabs.
Currently Turkey, a NATO member, has been
responsible for holding up the admission of Sweden
and Finland into the international body.
Recep Erdogan
the Crown
Prince of Saudi Arabia and is expected to
take over as king of the oil-rich nation when
his father 87-year-old King Salman is no
longer able to serve as king. While he is the
seventh son of King Salman, his power was
significantly escalated after he became
Minister of Defence in 2015. He is a violent
man and rules an authoritarian regime. He is
personally linked to the assassination of a
prominent Washington Post journalist and is
directly responsible for the ongoing
humanitarian crisis in Yemen. At the same
time he is also the architect of some minor
reforms in the deeply religious Saudi Arabia
as well.
Muhammad Bin Salman
the House Minority
Leader in 2023 as well as the leader of the House
Democratic Caucus. He is the first person to take
the helm of the democrats since Nancy Pelosi took
