Q

Characteristics of tundra

A
  • harsh cold winters, short summers
  • treeless - too cold and not wet enough
  • low precipitation
  • nutrient poor soils
  • lack of biodiversity
  • animals are migratory
  • soils are permanently frozen - permafrost

Q

Characteristics of taiga

A
  • coniferous forest - drought resistant
  • retain their leaves all yr to maximise photosynthesis
  • 50cm/yr rainfall - longer growing season, more plants
  • wolves, bears

16
Q

Characteristics of tem/ grassland

A
  • dominant vegetation i s grasses due to periodic fires
  • low rainfall
  • hot summers, cold winters
17
Q

Characteristics of desert

A
  • low rain
  • temp fluctuates - above 20 at day below 0 at night
  • nutrient lacking soil high in salts
  • cacti, small animals, nocturnal to regulate body temp
18
Q

Characteristics of rainforest

A
  • rich ecosystem
  • warm moist climate
  • high rainfall
  • very quick nutrient cycle
  • soils are nutrient poor but thin layer of organic matter on top of soil makes plants v productive
  • insects, reptiles, amphibians
19
Q

Characteristics of savanna

A
  • temp varies little through yr high 20s
  • rain is v seasonal
  • wildfires, vegetations adapted
  • grass - used for animal grazing
20
Q

What factors affect the distribution and charavteristics of biomes?

A
  • climate (precipiation, temp, sunlight exposure)
  • Local factors (soil,water,altitude)
21
Q

How does precipitation affect distribution of biomes?

A
  • Forest biomes found in areas of low pressure -> rainy = supports tree growth
  • high pressure areas = deserts = low rainfall
22
Q

How does temp. affect distribution of biomes?

A
  • around equator, sun’s radiaiton in conc = warm = plants more productive when there is more rain = tropical rainforest
  • At higher latitudes, sunlight becomes less intense and more seasonal
  • Poles = low temps = low rain and lack of light limit plant growth
23
Q

What does low latitude mean?

A

High temp (relation to the equator location)

24
Q

How does rock type affect an environment?

A
  • Affects soil acidity
  • minerals and nutrients in soil
  • can be a limiting factor to what grows
25
Q

Examples of goods

A

timber, food, plants

26
Q

Examples of 5 services

A
  • Nutrient cycle
  • Water cycle
  • Carbon sink
  • Healthy soils
  • Reduces risk of flooding
27
Q

Why is there an increased demand for goods?

A
  • Increased affluence
  • increase population
  • Increased urbanisation
  • industrialisation increasing in poorer regions
28
Q

How does the biosphere provide resources for people (food)?

A
  • Fish and meat part of biosphere
  • Sustainable harvesting of fruits, berries and nuts
  • Natrual vegeatation can be replaced with crops like wheat and rice
29
Q

How does the biosphere provide resources for people (medicine)?

A
  • Poppies - sourc eof painkiller morphine
  • Aloe plant has soothing propoerties and used in cosmetics
  • Periwinkle - used to treat leukaemia and Hodgkins disease
30
Q

How does the biosphere provide resources for people (fuel resources)?

A
  • Animal dung dried and burnt as fuel
  • Wood from trees and shrubs
  • Biofuels convert plant products to fuel through diff processes eg bioethanol made by fermenting crops like sugarcane
31
Q

How does the biosphere provide resources for people (building materials)?

A
  • Straw, the dry stalks of cereal plants - used for roofing and insulation
  • Animal dung - mixed with clay + strawc= bricks
  • Timber - for construction, from trees
32
Q

What 3 things does the biosphere do for us?

A
  • Keeps soil healthy for plants to grow - new nutrients provided by rotting plant merial
  • Regulates gases that make up atmos. = plants absorb co2 and release o2
  • Regulates water cycle - plants slow the flow of water to rivers and filter water to make it clean
33
Q

Malthus theory

A
  • Impossible to increase food production as rapidly as pop. growth
  • If pop grow too much, food supply will run out
  • People die, pop decreases
34
Q

Boserup theory

A
  • Human innovation will be sparked by demands on resources
  • If there is a high demand for food, humans will find a new way to produce more food - same to water and energy
35
Q

What happens as alititude increases?

A
  • Temp gets colder
  • Prcipiation increases
36
Q

What is the biosphere

A
  • living layer of earth between the atmosphere and lithosphere where all plants and animals are found
  • Within, we find biomes
37
Q

How is the biosphere being exploited by humans

A
  • Energy
  • water
  • mineral resources
38
Q

What is the carbon sink?

A

anything that absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases – for example, plants, the ocean and soil.
