Nat Turner
Led the biggest slave rebellion ever. Claimed he had a vision to kill whites and him and a few others killed about 60 whites.
Abraham Lincoln
Was president during the Civil War and chose sides with the North.
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Wrote the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin about an enslaved man who was abused by Simon Legree and eventually died from a beating.
Daniel Webster
A member of Congress for Massachusetts who spoke for the Northeast.
Henry Clay
A senator that persuaded Congress to adopt the Missouri Act of 1820.
Stephen Douglas
Pushed the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854 which pushed the nation closer to war.
Dred Scott
An enslaved man who was a slave in a free state, who sued for his freedom, but was not granted. The Supreme Court ruled him not free because he was not a citizen and he was property of his owner so his owner had property rights.
Frederick Douglas
Born into slavery and broke the law by learning to read, he eventually escaped to the North and spoke out against slavery. He also published an anti-slavery newspaper called the North Star.
