Disenfranchisement
Black americans were not allowed to vote because of certain laws (ex. literacy tests, grandfather clauses, poll taxes)
Exploitation
Black americans would get treated unfairly and have poor working conditions. They would get paid less still work the same amount
Violence
There was a lot of violence towards Black americans and they would get lynched and tortured
Segregation
Many public places were divided up into “whites” and “blacks”. The white side was normally treated way better compared to the blacks.
Thurgood Marshall
The first African American to serve on supreme court
Rosa Parks
She was arrested for not giving up her seat on the bus. She also helped start the montgomery bus boycott.
MLK
A leader who served as a nonviolent and peaceful protester activist
James Meredith
The first African American student to register at Ole Miss and he was surrounded by guards 24/7
George Wallace
The governor of Alabama and he was a big supporter of racial segregation. He supported the policies of the “Jim Crow” law.
Lyndon B. Johnson
The president who was against segregation. He gave the government the tools to be able to end de jure segregation (segregation by law)
Fannie Lou Hamer
Voting rights/civil rights activist who was a voice of MFDP (Mississippi freedom democratic party) at a national convention and he won support
Malcolm X
Advocated for armed self defense and he urged his followers to separate themselves from white people. He was also a part of the Black power
Stokely Carmichael
Leader of SNCC who decided to lead his followers in a march to finish what Meredith had started after he was killed. (Meredith was shot while standing up for Black americans)
Robert Kennedy
Democratic senator and was the younger brother of JFK. He was a civil rights activist.
