Ludwig I of Bavaria (1786 - 1868)
A
- king of bavaria 1820-48
- patron of arts, passionate about greek culture
- initially liberal but became more conservative after 1830
- alienated conservatives by relationship w/ actress lola montez (eliza gilbert)
- faced popular unrest in 1844 and 1848, when he abdicated
- was one of the first states affected, in south bc of more liberal tradition
- unpopular and already unrest in state

Frederick August II of Saxony (1797-1854)
A
- progressive young prince
- regent from 1830, w/ his father introducing reforms to saxony
- became king in 1836 and continued a reforming policy
- appointed liberal ministers in 1848, but dismissed them in 1849
- angry crowds forced him to flee until he was restored to power by prussian and saxon troops.

Frederick William IV of Prussia (1795 - 1861)
A
- reigned as king of prussia from 1840.
- keen builder and improver and developed berlin
- believed in trad role of king and aristocracy, refused to accept offer to be emperor of germany in 1849
- restored monarchical authority after revolution of 1848
- was not a dictator and accepted a new constitution which lasted until 1918 in prussia

Joseph von Radowitz (1797-1853)
A
- catholic aristocrat from western germany who fought for napoleon
- became senior officer in prussian army after 1815
- was used as a diplomat, became de facto foreign minister in 1848
- took a leading part in developing the erfurt union and urged war against austria for opposing it
- resigned when this didn’t happen
- advisor to frederick william iv, aimed to link hopes of german middle class to prussian state through union with saxony and hanover. ERFURT UNION!
