Penetrating Trauma Flashcards
What is cavitation?
The opening produced by a force pushing body tissues laterally away from the tract of a projectile
Are cavitations temporary?
Yes, it is temporary even in the presence of severe intra abdominal injury
How do cavitation become permanent?
Yes, when the force of the projectile exceeds the tensile strength of the tissue
What determines the effect of a projectile on the body?
The energy created and dissipated by the object into the surrounding tissues
What are considered low-energy projectiles?
Knives, needles, and ice picks
How do low-energy projectiles cause damage?
Their sharp, cutting edges.
How are firearms classified in terms of energy?
Mid to High energy
What classifies a firearm as mid and high?
Muzzle velocity 1000 FPS vs. 2000 FPS
What damage can penetrating trauma have if in the abdomen?
Damage air-filled and solid organs, vascular injury, trauma to the vertebral column and spinal cord injuries
Where should penetrating trauma patients with injuries to the box be transported?
Level I, even if they are “stable”.
