Organ Injuries From Car Accidents Flashcards
How does the ligamentum arteriosum can death in a traumatic car accident?
This ligament attaches the aorta to the pulmonary artery, and on a high impact accident that ligament can tear away from either the aorta or the pulmonary artery leaving a hole in the wall of the artery allowing the patient to bleed out and die.
What occurs in the body when deceleration occurs quickly (eg. head on MVA)
Organ in motion remain in motion and cause risk for separation of structures that anchor organs to the body. Injury to vascular pedicle or mesenteric attachment can lead to brisk, exsanguinating hemorrhage
What is the vascular pedicle?
is the distance between parallel lines drawn from the point at which the superior vena cava intersects the right main bronchus and a line drawn at the takeoff of the left subclavian artery from the aorta
What is the mesenteric?
The organ that attaches the intestines to the posterior abdominal wall in humans and is formed by the double fold of peritoneum. It helps in storing fat and allowing blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves to supply the intestines, among other functions.
What can cause a tear in the mesenteric?
The forward motion of the small and large intestines
What can cause a tear in the vascular pedicle?
The downward and forward motion of the liver
What is the paper bag effects?
Occurs when compression injuries occur to the thorax
What can happen to the abdominal organs during a traumatic event?
- Rupture of solid organs
- Vascular organ hemorrhage
- Hollow organ perforation into the peritoneal cavity
