Pendulums Flashcards
How do you work out the time period for one complete swing?
T (seconds) = 1 / f (Hz)
Does the length of the pendulum affect its time period?
Yes, the longer the pendulum, the larger the time period
Does the mass of the pendulum affect its time period?
no
Does the amplitude of the pendulum affect its time period?
no
Why does the amplitude of the pendulum not affect its time period?
When it is lifted higher, it will travel faster on the way down because it has more GP energy and faster on the way up because it therefore has more kinetic energy, so although it has further to travel, it will travel faster.
What happens at the highest point of a pendulum?
The pendulum briefly stops and stores energy as GP energy
What happens at the lowest point of a pendulum?
GP energy is transferred to kinetic energy as the pendulum travels fastest
