• Attaches lower limb to the axial skeleton
• Consist of 2 coxal bones or hip bones (innominate bone)
• Each coxal bone is formed by 3 fused bones: ilium, ischium, pubis
Pelvic Girdle (Hip Bones/Os Coxae)
is the widest and largest flaring bone that forms the superior region of a coxal bone.
Ilium
it is composed of a body, an inferior ramus and superior ramus. Ischial tuberosities (sitting bones) received body weight when sitting.
Ischium
It is the most anterior portion of the hip bone. It consists of a body, superior ramus and inferior ramus
Pubis
articulation with the sacrum.
Sacroiliac Joint
articulation between the left and right hip bones.
Pubic Symphysis
articulation with the head of femur.
Hip Joint
Commonly known as female pelvis, most suitable for childbirth and wider brim
Gynecoid Pelvis (50%)
Commonly known as male pelvis with heart shaped brim. Transverse diameter is wider and childbirth is difficult.
Android (20%)
Oval in shape with shorter transverse diameter is
Anthropoid Pelvis (25%)
Rare type of pelvis with kidney shaped brim and not conductive to vaginal delivery. The transverse diameter is wider.
Platypelloid (5%)
