Lower Limb Flashcards
consist of the bones of the thigh, patella, leg, ankle and foot
Lower Limb
region between the hip and the knee
Thigh
is the only bone in the thigh and the longest bone in the body. It can be divided into three parts; proximal, shaft and distal.
Femur
•triangular sesamoid bone enclosed in the (quadriceps) tendon that secures the anterior thigh muscles to the tibia.
•Largest sesamoid bone
Patella
is a hinge type synovial joint, which mainly allows for flexion and extension (and a small degree of medial and lateral rotation). It is formed by articulations between the patella, femur and tibia.
1. tibiofemoral (hinge)
2. Patellofemoral (plane/gliding)
Knee Joint
Region between the knee and ankle. It contains two parallel bones called tibia (medial side) and fibula (lateral side)
Leg
Main bone of the lower leg that receives the weight of the body from the femur and transmits it to the foot.
Tibia (Shin Bone)
A sticklike bone with slightly expanded ends. Not for weight bearing, but for muscle attachment
Fibula
refer to two articulations between the tibia and fibula of the leg. These joints have minimal function in terms of movement but play a greater role in stability and weight-bearing.
Proximal and Distal Tibiofibular Joints
is a synovial joint (hinge) located in the lower limb. It is formed by the bones of the leg (tibia and fibula) and the foot (talus).
Ankle/Talocrural Joint
a set of seven irregularly shaped bones. The tarsal bones of the foot are organized into three rows: proximal, intermediate, and distal.
Ankle (Tarsal Bones)
what are the tarsal bones
- Calcaneus
- Talus
- Navicular
- Cuboid
- Cuneiforms
The skeleton of the _____ includes the metatarsal bone and phalanges of the foot and are arranged and numbered in a manner similar to the metacarpal and phalanges of the hand
Foot
are the 14 bones of the toes. The second to fifth toes all have proximal, middle, and distal ________. The great toe has only 2; proximal and distal ________.
Phalanges
Consist of five long bones that is convex dorsally and consist of a head, neck, shaft, and base They are numbered I-V (medial to lateral).
Metatarsal
