pelvic cavity, floor, roof and the perineum Flashcards
describe where the pelvic cavity is located and what it is continuous with
the pelvic cavity lies within the bony pelvis, between the pelvic inlet and the pelvic outlet. It is continuous with the abdominal cavity
describe what is meant by the pelvic floor
the pelvic floor is an internal wall of skeletal muscle, separating the pelvic cavity and perineum
what is the perineum
the perineum is the area inferior to the pelvic floor, in between the proximal parts of the lower limbs (little space below pelvic floor)
what do openings in the pelvic floor allow
allows for the distal alimentary(digestive), renal and reproductive tracts to pass through
what is meant by the pelvic roof
pelvic roof is formed by the parietal(pertaining to walls of organ or cavity) peritoneum
parietal peritoneum is
the lining of the abdominal cavity, firmly attached to the walls and draped over the pelvic viscera(area)
describe the relationship between the parietal peritoneum, peritoneal cavity and abdominal cavity
the parietal peritoneum lines the walls of the pelvic viscera and abdominal cavity, the peritoneal cavity lies just above the peritoneum and below the abdominal cavity
describe what the vesico-uterine pouch and pouch of Douglas(rectouterine) are and what their clinical significance is
they are pouches caused by the draping of the peritoneum over the bladder, uterus and rectum. the vesico-uterine lies between the bladder and uterus, the Douglas lies between the rectum and uterus. They catch any excess fluid and if this gets too much it can be removed.
