female reproductive system Flashcards
what are the female reproductive organs and accessory organs
organs = ovaries
accessory organs = uterine tubes, uterus and vagina
name the 3 layers of the uterus wall
perimetrium, myometrium and endometrium
describe the 5 steps of fertilisation/menstration
- ovum develops in ovaries
- 1 ovum released every menstrual cycle from ovary to peritoneal cavity
- ovum is gathered by fimbriae into infundibulum of uterine tube
- moved along uterine tube by cilia
- if fertilised attaches to endometrium, if not menstruation occurs and ovum/endometrium is expelled by contractions of the myometrium
state where fertilisation and implantation normally occur
fertilisation normally occurs in ampulla, implantation in body of uterus(endometrium)
explain what is meant by an ectopic pregnancy
when a fertilised ovum implants itself out with the uterine cavity, either in the uterine tube or abdominal cavity. potentially very dangerous
explain how sterilisation of a female is achieved
tubal ligation, both uterine tubes are clipped, cut or cautherised to block the lumen so no ovum can pass
