What are the indications for application of a SAM splint?
A
- suspected pelvic fracture
- an awake patient c/o pain to pelvic area including lower back (sacroiliac joint), groin or hips
- an unconscious or ACS pt with significant MOI
- in the cause of a traumatic cardiac arrest, a pelvic splint should be applied as a matter or clinical priority if MOI is suggestive of pelvic trauma

What are the contraindications for application of SAM splint?
A
- impaled object preventing application

What are the clinical precautions for the SAM splint?
A
- should be appropriately sized
- smaller paeds may require a sheet/towel/pillow case as a pelvic wrap

How do you reassess the SAM splint?
A
- reassess pain
- reassess for any pressure points in splinting
- reassess peripheral perfusion in limbs

Can you remove a SAM splint prehospitally?
A
No. Once applied a pelvic splint should only be used by an Emergency Physician
