Q

What are the 7 LNT principles? Give examples of each from our trip

A
  1. Plan ahead and be prepared - planned and prep food
  2. Pack it in and pack it our - brought back garbage
  3. Dispose of properly what you can’t pack out - use out houses
  4. Travel and camp on durable surfaces - we walked and camped on paths
  5. Leave what you find - we took pictures of our subjects instead of removing them
  6. Minimize campfire impacts - used the fire pits
  7. Respect wildlife and be considerate of others - Did not let Todd hunt rabbits, did not trample cross country ski tracks

Q

Describe the wilderness paradox

A

Wilderness is a recreation resource but wilderness is also supposed to be a pristine ecological reserve.

17
Q

What are the 2 outdoor ethics

A

Woodcraft and LNT

18
Q

Describe woodcraft

A

Making wilderness a home, masculine, using nature, minimal equipment

19
Q

Describe LNT

A

Be observant, leave nature untouched for others, gadgetry, challenge and self realization.

20
Q

What is the major issue with LNT

A

It actually leaves a trace because of the special equipment required to participate. The amount the must go into harvesting and manufacturing goods for consumers leaves a bigger foot print than expected.

21
Q

3 problems LNT

A
  1. Conflicts with principles of ecology (not possible to LNT)
  2. Separates humans from environment (museum effect)
  3. Not connected to day to day living (shows wilderness as somewhere away from home)
22
Q

What is the “ski camber”

A

space between the bottom of the ski and the ground

23
Q

How do you determine what length of ski’s for a person

A

same height or a bit shorter; do not have longer skis

24
Q

Why use wax on skis?

A

Similar to that of the scales on a fish, was is used to increase friction to all for the ski to grab and pull on the snow in one direction and the glide in the other

25
Q

After applying wax to a ski what must you do?

A

rub it in and spread it with a cork

26
Q

Who did the LNT article?

A

Moskowitz and Ottey
