PEDS 205 Final Part 2 - Outdoor Ed, land ethics, skiing Flashcards
What is outdoor education and what makes it up?
Experiential process of learning by doing, takes place mostly outdoors. Emphasis on relationships between people and nature. Includes: Adventure ed, environmental ed, and place based ed
Amount of body weight for a pack?
1/3 your weight
Where should weight be in a pack?
Lower close to your back
Responses to cold (3)
Shivering, vasoconstriction, cold diuresis
Signs of severe hypothermia (3)
Stops shivering, core temp below 32, impaired cognitive function
3 ways to treat water - and a con about each
- Boil - must let cool, takes time
- Chemical - takes 20-30 min
- Filter - not built for virus’s
What is a Land ethic?
an internalized set of rules that govern our relationship towards the land
Define anthropocentric
Human centered, we are apart from nature, nature has infinite resources we can plunder.
Define Biocentric
We are a part of nature, resources are finite, earth centered
Another name for anthropocentric; give an example
Takers; European desscendents/western society
Another name for biocentric; give an example
Leavers; first nations
What is the controversy surrounding the duality of biocentricity and anthropocentricity?
A person’s veiws are changing and not always consistent so they may be in some regards biocentric (wanting to save the polar bears) but also anthropocentric in some veiws (wanting to exterminate rats cause of disease)
2 points about takers
Exterminate competitors
Store their food
2 points about leavers
world is not made for one species
mankind was not needed to bring order to earth
What are the 7 LNT principles? Give examples of each from our trip
- Plan ahead and be prepared - planned and prep food
- Pack it in and pack it our - brought back garbage
- Dispose of properly what you can’t pack out - use out houses
- Travel and camp on durable surfaces - we walked and camped on paths
- Leave what you find - we took pictures of our subjects instead of removing them
- Minimize campfire impacts - used the fire pits
- Respect wildlife and be considerate of others - Did not let Todd hunt rabbits, did not trample cross country ski tracks
Describe the wilderness paradox
Wilderness is a recreation resource but wilderness is also supposed to be a pristine ecological reserve.
What are the 2 outdoor ethics
Woodcraft and LNT
Describe woodcraft
Making wilderness a home, masculine, using nature, minimal equipment
Describe LNT
Be observant, leave nature untouched for others, gadgetry, challenge and self realization.
What is the major issue with LNT
It actually leaves a trace because of the special equipment required to participate. The amount the must go into harvesting and manufacturing goods for consumers leaves a bigger foot print than expected.
3 problems LNT
- Conflicts with principles of ecology (not possible to LNT)
- Separates humans from environment (museum effect)
- Not connected to day to day living (shows wilderness as somewhere away from home)
What is the “ski camber”
space between the bottom of the ski and the ground
How do you determine what length of ski’s for a person
same height or a bit shorter; do not have longer skis
Why use wax on skis?
Similar to that of the scales on a fish, was is used to increase friction to all for the ski to grab and pull on the snow in one direction and the glide in the other
