PEDS 205 Final Part 1 - Experiential Ed, Adventure Ed, Rock Climbing Flashcards
Outdoor Ed includes what 3 other types of education
Environmental Ed, Adventure ed, and place based ed
Joplin says 3 things about experiential ed
all learning is experiential, requires a debrief(internal/public), interdisciplinary (hands on and book work)
John Dewey was into what 2 types of education
Traditional and progressive
Define Traditional Education
Teacher focused, students are passive receivers
Define Progressive education
student focused, lacks guidance which makes it harder to learn, but more self directed/interested
What would experiential ed look like from a teachers/facilitatora perspective
Guide student to independence, build on what they know
What would experiential ed look like from a student perspective
must have brain turned on and be actively engaged (Joplin)
8 characteristics according to joplin about experiential ed
- Student based
- Personal Nature
- Process and product orientation
- Evaluation for reasons
- Holistic cunderstanding and component analysis
- Organized around experience
- Perception based
- Individual based
What is the difference between experiential learning and experiential education
the debrief: EL- may occur within the individual; EE - Must be public
Describe Joplin’s action reflection cycle
- Focus - talk about whats gonna happen (fred telling me to do the pipe rack at EIA)
- Action (hurricane) - place the person in a challenging situation (doing that pipe rack at EIA) (Brain is “On”)
3/4. Support and feedback - give support to continue to try and feedback to give them a direction - Debrief - look at the event, recognize learning that occured.
In the action reflection cycle, the action depends on what?
the scenario and where it lies on the Macro and Micro scale
Con’s of experiential ed
takes time to prep and execute, students may resist new style, more emotional
What is the focus of adventure ed
Interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships through games and community building
What is the FVC?
Full value contract is a set of goals agreed on by everyone at the start to ensure physical and emotional safety to all`
What is Challenge by choice
Choosing if you want to participate or not. Encourages independence.
What is the sequence of adventure games, give an example of each level and how are the levels facilitated so we can progress forward?
Cooperation - name game
trust building - trust falls
problem solving - human knot
personal/group challenge - camping trip
After each “level” a debrief must occur so to facilitate the community building/learning process
What type of debrief must occur with adventure ed?
only self reflection is required, public debrief is not required for adventure ed
John Dewey’s action reflection cycle
Big wave: Experience (top), Debrief/ Prebrief (bottom)
Under the wave: Experience -> reflect -> Generalize -> Apply
What was the type of breaking device used during wall climbing
the grigri
On Belay?
Belay On
Climbing?
Climb
Belay Off
Off Belay
Adventure Ed and Environmental ed are both a part of what trunk?
Outdoor education
When using trust falls with a new group what is the central paradox?
You need trust to perform the game but with a new group you do not yet have trust.
