Pedrotti Chapter 2 Flashcards
what is the electromagnetic spectrum
classification due to variations in wavelength
how to classify sources and detectors
on the basis of their spectral range and the strength of the signal produced (sources) or measured (detectors)
what is monochromatic
a wave composed of a single wavelength
what is a spectrum of radiation
the distribution of energy among the various constituent wavelengths
what does the adjective spectral imply
dependance of wavelength
what is the visible spectrum
380nm to 770nm
what is the optical spectrum
infrared (1mm) + visible + ultraviolet (1nm)
What is the photometric term and unit for radiant energy
Radiant Energy [Qe(J=Ws)] is Luminous Energy [Qv=lm*s]
What is the photometric term and unit for radiant energy density
Radiant Energy Density [we=dQe/dV] is Luminous Energy Density [wv=dQv/dV]
What is the photometric term and unit for radiant flux
Radiant flux [PHIe=dQe/dt] is Luminous flux [PHIv=dQv/dt]
What is Radiometry
The measurement of all radiant energy
WHat is Photometry
Measurement of the visible portion of the optical spectrum. It takes into account the response of the human eye.
What is a blackbody
An ideal absorber. All radiation falling on a blackbody, irrespective of wavelength or angle of incidence, is absorbed.
Define Luminance
Luminance is a photometric measure of the luminous intensity per unit area of light travelling in a given direction. It describes the amount of light that passes through, is emitted or reflected from a particular area, and falls within a given solid angle. The SI unit for luminance is candela per square metre (cd/m2). A non-SI term for the same unit is the “nit”.
