Shortly after delivery newborns are routinely given:
Erythromycin ointment in eyes to prevent infection
Vitamin K injection to prevent bleeding
Fever in a neonate
is an emergency!
Rectal temp over 100.4
Work up includes blood culture, urine culture, lumbar puncture and empiric antibiotics while awaiting culture results
Infant exams
Younger than about 9 months: Exam can be done on table
Older than 9 months:
Examine on parent’s lap
Stranger anxiety develops at this age
Object permanence develops
Must be flexible with exam sequence

difference between caput succadaneum and cephalohematoma
Caput succedaneum crosses suture lines.
Cephalohematoma does not.
(cephalohematoma is under the periosteum)
alopecia areata vs tinea capitis
alopecia areata- no broken hairs
tinea capitis- broken hairs. (ringworm of the scalp)
Ears
Children have wider, shorter eustachian tubes, predisposing them to ear infections
periodic breathing
immature nervous system will make them stop breathing sometimes, it’s totally normal.
innocent murmurs
Low pitched (non-turbulent, not high velocity)
