A baby is considered pre-term if it is born prior to
37 weeks of pregnancy
Treatment for patent ductus arteriosus
IV indomethacin or ibuprofen
Treatment for persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn
- Supportive care
- Inhaled nitric oxide
Treatment for respiratory distress syndrome
Surfactant (Curosurf, IInfasurf)
When will fetuses produce enough surfactant?
Fetuses will usually produce adequate surfactant by week 35.
Do not recommend aspirin/salicylates for patients age
< 16 years
Avoid ibuprofen in infants age
< 6 months
What is recommended for treating intestinal gas in infants?
Simethicone drops
Acetaminophen pediatrc dosing
- 10-15 mg/kg/dose q4-6 h
- Max: 75 mg/kg/day
Acetaminophen oral liquid formulation concentration: 160 mg/5 mL
Ibuprofen pediatrc dosing
- 5-10 mg/kg/dose q6-8h
- Max: 40 mg/kg/day
RSV treatments
- Respiratory support if O2 sat ≤ 90%
- Fluids
- Suction secretions
- Consider inhaled rivabirin (Virazole) if high risk
Who should receive palivizumab (Synagis)?
In the first year of life:
* Premature infants born at < 29 weeks gestation
* Premature infants born < 32 weeks gestation with chronic lung disease who are < 12 months of age
* Infants < 12 months of age with certain heart conditions
How is palivizumab given?
Given IM at a dose of 15mg/kg monthly throughout the RSV season
* Max: 5 doses per season
What is croup?
Inflmmation of the upper airway leads to erythema & narrowing of the trachea, just below the vocal cords.
Croup is most common in children age
< 6 years
