Pediatric Clinical Disorders Flashcards
What three core criteria must be met to diagnose intellectual disability?
- IQ of 70 or lower
- Deficits in adaptive functioning for their age and culture
- Symptom onset before age 18
What range of IQ scores are generally associated with mild, moderate, and severe intellectual disability?
Consistent with the normative curve, the most common presentation is mild ID and severe/profound ID is relatively uncommon.
- Mild 50-55 to 70
- Moderate 35-40 to 50-55
- Severe 20-25 to 35-40
- Profound <20-25
What gross neuroanatomical features are associated with autism?
Enlarged head circumference with mild ventricular enlargements and/or enlargement of some of the brain structures.
What are two neural maturation processes that are thought to go awry in ID?
Disruption of neural migration/branching patterns of dendrites and abnormal apoptosis.
What causes of low academic achievement must be reasonably ruled out to diagnose a learning disorder?
Low IQ
Sensory Impairment
Emotional Disturbance
Lack of Sufficient Opportunities
What are the two areas affected in the double deficit model of reading impairment?
Rapid Automatized Naming
Phonological Awareness
