A
  • Trauma is the leading cause of death and disability >1 yo
  • Anatomy/physiotherapy in children is different, mgt of injuries sometimes differ.
  • Prompt triage/ tnp to appropriate centres is key
  • Most trauma deaths is due to TBI
  • Prehospital are should focus on A,R, shock, spinal immobilizations, and rapid tsp.
  • Hypoxia/ shock are significant factors in Secondary Cerebral Injury

Physiological Characteristics

A

Higher metabolic rate/increased oxygen consumption
Increased cardiac output and ventilation to match increased metabolic demand
Small volume lungs with small oxygen resevoir
Quick to develop gastric distention which can lead to decreased lung capacity
