Ped Case Precaution s Flashcards
BP Precautions
Awareness of surgery specific protocol
Awareness of potential decreased sensation
Maintain proper alignment during WB
Avoidance of overstretching
Complications of BP injury
Torticollis
Dc sensation
Unstable joint
Contractures
Flaccidity
Neglect of involved UE
NICU precautions
Continuously monitor vitals and behavioral cues
Monitor tubs and lines
Determine whether cost of intervention out weights benefits
Complications interfering with PT in NICU
Painand stress, decline in physiologic stability
Apnea/bradycardia
Fractures
CP precautions:
Close monitoring of skin integrity with aFO use
Close positioning of therapist with child during gait and transfers
Monitoring durign all movements for potential impulsivity
Complications associated with CP
Parental need to learn about diagnosis and implications
Parent w/ limited financial means and may require assistance from social workers at hospital to obtain equipment
DCD precautions
Impulsivity
DCD complications
Parent and staff need to learn about diagnosis and implications to help child gain age appropriate motor skills
ASD precautions
Be aware of sensory system and tendencies toward overstimulation
Provide warnings and cues when transitioning between activities
Complications w/ ASD
Child might have difficulty with various sensory stimuli and cause them to shut down and not participate in therapy
Precautions for CMT
Passive stretching may be contraindicated d/t other conditions
Passive stretching can cause snapping of SCM in 8% of kids
Complications associated with CMT
Comorbidities: Plagiocephaly, gastroesophageal reflux, developmental delay, cardiac and neurological conditions
Parent noncompliance
Lack of infant cooperation due to separation anxiety can affect tolerance to interventions
Spina Bifida precautions
Decreased cardiorespiratory endurance
Higher resting heart rate and increased HR w/ activities
Increased fracture risk d/t osteoporosis
Increased risk for hip dislocation
Skin breakdown
Difficulties w/ thermoregulation
Difficulty with falls
Latex allergies
Incontinence
Spasticity
Clubfoot precautions
Stress fracture after serial casting
Avoid high impact activities like running, jumping, hopping
Identify compensatory strategies during higher level balance and weightbearing activities
Clubfoot complications
Stress fracture
Precautions related to idiopathic toe walking
Pain or spasms related to overstretching ankle plantarflexions (especially in serial casts)
Complications related to idiopathic toe walking
Secondary skin complications relted to serial casting
Skin breakdown from ill fitting orthoses
Pain in feet and legs
