Pectoral (shoulder) girdle Flashcards
What does the pectoral girdle do?
attaches the bones of the upper limbs to the axial skeleton
What do the left & right pictorial girdles consist of?
a clavicle & a scapula
What does the clavicle articulate with?
the clavicle is the anterior part of the girdle which articulates w the sternum
What does the scapula articulate with?
the scapula is the posterior part of the girdle & articulates w the clavicle & humerus
What do the pectoral girdles not articulate with?
the vertebral column
what does the lateral end of the clavicle articulate with?
it articulates w the acrimon of the scapula
what does the medial end of the clavicle articulate with?
the sternum
Clavicle function
Bce of its position, the clavicle transmits mechanical force from the upper limb to the trunk.
What is inferior to the acrimon?
the glenoid cavity
What does the glenoid cavity articulate with?
the head of the humerus to form the shoulder joint
What is the coracoid process?
a projection on the scapula where the muscles attach
How many bones does the upper limb consist of?
30
How does the pectoral girdle allow movements in many directions?
the joints of the shoulder girdles are freely movable
What are the bones that make up the upper limb?
a humerus in the arm, ulna & radius in the forearm, 8 carpals (wrist bone), 5 metacarpals (palm bone), & 14 phalanges (finger bones) in the hand
What is the longest bone of the upper limb?
the humerus
