Connective tissue Flashcards
Fibroblasts function?
secretes collagen, synthesises elastic & reticular fibres & extracellular matrix, responsible for wound healing. It is an immature cell found in loose & dense connective tissues that can still divide
Fibroblasts structure?
large, flat cells w branching processes
Fibroblasts location?
Present in several connective tissues. the stroma of many tissues
Adipocyte structure?
little matrix, few fibres, large cells
Adipocyte function?
fat storage (triglycerides)
Adipocyte location?
below the skin, & around the organs heart & kidney, located throughout loose connective tissue
Mast cells function?
produce heparin (prevents blood clotting), produces histamine (triggers inflammatory response) → dilates small blood vessels during an inflammation & kill bacteria
Mast cells location?
found near blood vessels
Macrophage function?
they are phagocytes that develop from monocytes (a type of white blood cell). Eat bacteria & cell debris by phagocytosis
Macrophage structure?
irregular shape, short branched projections
Plasma cells function?
important in the body’s immune response → they secrete antibodies that attack & neutralise foreign substances
Plasma cells structure?
small cells that develop from B lymphocytes
