Peach Pack Flashcards
What’s a variable?
Anything that varies
What’s an independent variable?
The variable which is manipulated by the experimenter
What’s the dependent variable?
The outcome which is measured by the experimenter
What are extraneous variables?
Any variables that might have an effect on the dv (that isn’t the iv)
What are confounding variables?
Uncontrolled extraneous variables that have had an effect on results
What are situational variables?
Variables in the research that can have an effect on the dependent variable (eg unexpected noise)
What’s a participant variable?
Variables that come from the participant that could have an effect on their performance (eg bad memory)
What is order effects?
The order in which the participants carry out tasks
How could you control a participant variable?
Random allocation of participants
How could you control order effects?
Counterbalancing
What are demand characteristics?
All of the cues that participants might receive that indicate the purpose of the research
How can you control demand characteristics?
Low levels of deception
What are researcher effects?
A researcher may influence the results of an experiment
How can you control researcher effects?
Standardised procedures
What are co variables?
The two variables in a correlation that vary in association with one another
