A

. This is because it would stop the USSR from being able to keep a façade of missile capabilities as this proposal promoted openness which would contradict Khrushchev’s aims for peaceful coexistence to strengthen the USSR’s position.

why was the berlin wall crisis important?

A

August 1961 – continued unrest & numbers fleeing Berlin led to the decision to close 2 sides of the city. Overnight, barbed wire fencing was erected. The lack of a Western response led to the creation of a 30-mile concrete wall. The peaceful response ended a major cause of tension.

22 October US diplomat was prevented from crossing the border to visit the opera.
General Clay sent troops to assist in crossing & then sent tanks to the crossing.
Khrushchev was forced to respond & opposing tanks faced each other 150 m apart.

A

because Tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union over access to the outpost city of Berlin and its Soviet-controlled eastern sector had increased to the point of direct military confrontation.
