1921-1989 Russian nuclear physicist, dissident, y activist for disarmament, peace y human rights - Worked in the development of Soviet nuclear weapons - Became an advocate of civil liberties y civil reforms in the USSR - Nobel Peace Prize 1975 - Namesake of the Sakharov Prize, awarded anually by the European Parliament to people dedicated to human rights

2003- Swedish environmental activist - Known for raising global awareness of the risks posed by climate change, y with holding politicians to account for their lack of action on the climate crisis - Credited with popularizing y organizing the School Strike for Climate (AKA Fridays for Future)

1828-1910 Swiss businessman y social activist - Awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 for founding the Red Cross - Witnessed the aftermath of a bloody battle in the Second Italian War of Independence (1859), y wrote A Memory of Solferino which inspired the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863

1854-1951 American politician from OH - Led “Coxey’s Army”, a group of unemployed men who marched to D.C. to present a “Petition in Boots” demanding that Congress allocate funds to create jobs for the unemployed in 1894 y again 1914 - Ran unsuccessfully for several elected offices
Jane Jacobs
1916-2006 American-Canadian author y activist from PA - Known for her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), which argued that urban renewal did not respect the needs of city dwellers - While living in NYC, led a protest resulting in the eventual cancellation of the Lower Manhattan Expressway (LOMEX) project - Moved to Toronto in 1968, y led a similar fight against expressways there
Mother Teresa (Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu)
1910-97 Albanian missionary from Skopje - Founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 to run services for the very poor - Worked most of life in Kolkata, India - Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 1979 - Canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta by the Catholic Church in 2016
