When was a peace treaty signed?
After 5 months of negotiating on 28th June 1919. Allied countries and Germany
Why didn’t Germany want to sign?
Terms were harsh (eg. Restrictions on military, loss of territory, payments for things damaged)
What were the military terms for Germany?
Only volunteer army.
Not allowed an airforce or subs
Banned from manufacturing or trading in war materials.
Couldn’t have an army more than 100,000
What else did Germany have to agree with?
Lose territory = lost coalfields to France.
Build ships for allies and pay for damage.
Had to accept blame for War.
What is the Treaty of Trianon?
Took 70% of Hungary’s territory to create Czechoslovakia.
What is the Treaty of Neuilly?
Took parts of Bulgaria
What did France and Britain want to do to Germany?
Weaken them
Who was the League of Nations made up of?
42 members of state & a council
Who were the permanent members of the League of Nations?
Britain, France, Italy and Japan
When was the League of Nations established?
January 10th, 1920 or June 28th, 1919
Why didn’t the League work?
All wanted different things. Meetings could be lost in translation. Nothing to intervene if a war did start. No power (military). Could only make countries 'talk'.
What could the League of Nations do to prevent war?
Give a warning.
Order a trading embargo.
Threaten military action.
Order parties to negotiate.
What could represent the League of Nations?
A toothless tiger.
What was a weakness of the League of Nations?
Important nations were not league nations (eg. USA)
Why did Germany sign the Treaty of Versailles?
They knew that if they didn’t sign it, the allies soils invade Germany and they would be powerless.
