How do the UN promote peace?
- they use conflict resolution and reconciliation to create peace
- host peace talks
- use trade restrictiions
- send peace keeping forces
Why do wars occur?
- Self defence
- economic advantage
- fear
- national pride
- fighting against injustice
- racial hatred
How do religious organisations promote peace?
e. g. Muslim peace fellowship
- help victims of injustice
- encourage peace talks
- campaign against oppressive governments
- teach forgiveness
What defines a just war in islam?
- NO innocent civilians are killed
- a reasonable chance of success
- a just cause
- methods used are in proportion to the cause
- a last resort
What is lesser jihad?
a physical struggle(could be war)
- Muhammad fought in wars
- anyone killed in a just war goes to paradise
What is greater jihad?
A personal struggle/inner
Why don’t some muslims go to war?
Peace and forgiveness is at the heart of islam
- modern weapons are not compatible with a just war
- only leads to more violence
Why are there very few Muslim pacifists?
Because muslims are expected to fight in a just war
What are Muslim teachings about forgiveness?
- Many hadiths from the prophet supporting the need for forgiveness and reconciliation.
- Muslims should try and follow the example of the prophet - when Muhamad forgave the Jews
- on the day of judgement Allah will forgive people - ‘if Allah punished people to what they deserved he would not leave a single person standing’
- how can Muslims ask for forgiveness if they are not prepared to forgive
- says in the Quran you should - “Allah is forgiving”
- “if you forgive…god is oft forgiving”
What is restorative justice?
Gives victims of the crime to talk to the offender
What is reconciliation?
When people who were opposed to each other were brought together to forgive one another
