What are causes of war?

What is darfur?
- a civil war between the Sundanese army and non Arab groups
- Sudan is now split into two countries but the situation is still unsettled
How did remote locations affect the darfur war?
- the area was remote with poor transport and communication
- when trouble started it took other countries a long time to find out
- when international communities found out thousands were already dead
How did national pride affect the darfur war?
- the conflict in darfur was part of wider conflict in Sudan
- some anti government forces wanted the south of Sudan to be ruled independent and the government did not
How did ethnic hatred affect the darfur war?
- Both sides have had history of long standing disputes over religion and ethnic issues
- government was accused of persecuting mom Arabs
How did economic/environmental issues affect the darfur war?
- food and water shortages due to drought and increasing desertification forced people to move to south into farmland owned by others already struggling to survive
- farmers were growing cash crops reducing the amount of land available to grow food
What is the UN?
- uses conflict resolution and reconciliation
- aim to achieve world peace
- concerned with issues that have potential to conflict work peace (poverty)
- faced success and failure (darfur)
- reach talks reduce numbers of weapons with mass production
How did the UN try to negotiate in darfur?
- UN tried to negotiate with both sides
- the Sundanese government formed an agreement to stop the conflict
- the government didn’t follow the agreement
- peace talks were signed and broken there was some success in getting both sides to talk
How did the UN try to sanction in darfur?
- several stopped trading with Sudan
- the UN threatened to stop Sudan’s oil trade
- this got the government to give them some kind of response with the UN
How did the UN try to use peacekeeping forces in darfur?
- a small African Union peacekeeping force was allowed into darfur August 2004
- in 2007 an agreed peacekeeping force was allowed in
- had some success with protecting citizens
Did the UN succeed or fail in darfur?
- they managed to stem the number and frequency of killings and organised more peace talks
- intervention was too late to prevent mass killing
- peace is still not been achieved
What is the world council of Christians?
- founded 1948
- encourages all Christians to heal devisions through nations by talking
- involved in struggles in South Africa, Sudan etc
What is pax Christ?
- into national Catholic organisation set up in 1945 to work for peace
- opposed to war and violence
- encourages governments to solve their disputes through discussion

- nazis claimed their cause was right and just
- both sides may manipulate the theory going to war for their God

- if someone strikes your right cheek turn to them the other”: Mathew

- it has been accepted by many Christian churches
- some teachings in the bible support it
Why do some Christians follow the just war theory?
- sometimes war is the lesser of two evils
- it’s right to have armed forces to protect nations
- violence is necessary in response to invasion
- Jesus taught obedience to the government
Why do Christians follow pacifism?
- the 10 commandments forbid killing
- Jesus stopped his followers using violence
- Jesus taught people to love their enemies
- nuclear weapons cause unimaginable suffering
What is bullying?
- physically harming or attacking someone
- stealing or damaging someone else’s property
- accusing people of to get them into trouble
- calling people names
- cyberbullying
What are reasons for bullying?
- problems at home, with family members
- wanting to look tough
- dislike themselves and take it out on others
- have been victims themselves
What are the Samaritans?
- Well known UK charity that offers telephone support to people suffering from bullying
- many Christians are Samaritan volunteers
What are Christian attitudes to bullying?
- violence without cause is against Christian teachings
- everyone is made in Gods image
- the golden rule
- everyone deserves respect
- vulnerable and weak deserve protection
- bible teaches God will take action against cruel behaviour
- God judges humans after death on how they have lived
