Peace Flashcards
Who were the two main supporters of Marxist ideology in Russia?
What did they believe?
Lenin and Trotsky
Revolution in Russia would spark revolutions elsewhere in Europe. Germany would be likely to have a revolution.
What book did Lenin write in 1916 which reflected his ideology?
‘Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism’
- stated a revolution could occur in a relatively undeveloped country such as Russia- contrary to Marx- and then spread to other industrialised countries.
What contradiction to ideology occurred?
Bolsheviks were determined to pull Russia out of WW1
- this would help the German government and fail to help the workers and soldiers revolt.
When were the peace negotiations held?
What did Germany demand?
December 1917.
Germany demanded huge amounts of land plus a large war indemnity.
Lenin insisted that German terms should be met.
What resistance to the German peace terms was shown
Bukharin led some Bolsheviks demanding
‘the war should continue’
What treaty was signed in March 1918
The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed. But only after it was ratified by an emergency Party Congress.
Lenin had to threaten to resign twice before this happened.
It was evident ‘socialism at home’ would take priority over the spread of international revolution.
(Lenin still believed in this- March 1919, the Comintern was set up)
What did Russia lose as a result of the peace
1/6th of population
1/3rd of agriculture
26% of railways
74% of iron ore and coal supplies
Reaction to the treaty
The left wing SRs walked out of the Sovnarkom over the terms of the treaty
A split in the Bolshevik Party had been averted

Became the Communist Party
