PE Theory Flashcards
Name the 6 functions of the skeletal system
Protection Support Blood cell production Movement Storage of minerals Posture
Support
The skeleton gives shape and support without it we would be a blob of skin.
E.g. the ribs shape our upper body (chest)
Posture
The skeleton enables us to stand or sit upright
The spine is very important for posture
Protection
Flat bones protect the vital organs beneath them
E.g the cranium protects the brain
Movement
Muscles attache to bones, and pull on them creating movement
E.g the bicep pulls on the humerus to cause flexion at the elbow
Storage of minerals
Bones act as a store for: phosphorus, calcium, potassium and iron
Blood cell production
Red and white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow of long bones
E.g the femur
Tendon
Connects muscle to bone
Ligament
Tough elastic fibre linking bone to bone
Cartilage
End of bones, stops them from rubbing together, acts as a shock absorber, slippery surface, lubricates the joint
Synovial membrane / joint capsule
Produces and releases synovial fluid into the joint
Synovial fluid
Lubricates the joint to allow smooth movement
Muscle
Joined to bones by tendons and responsible for causing movement
Hinge joint
Only allows movement on one plane, working like a door hinge
E.g elbow joint and knee joint
Ball and socket joint
Allows wide range of movement, the round head of one bone fits into the cup shaped depression of another
E.g shoulder joint and hip joint
