pe- exercise physiology Flashcards
Conduction
Heat exchanged by 2 objects in contact
Convection
Heat exchanged with a fluid that is flowing
Radiation
heat exchanged from a warmer body to cooler surroundings without physical contact
Evaporation
Cooling of the body as a result of the vaporisation of sweat
Dehydration
When amount of water leaving the body exceeds the amount being taken in
Double heat load
Where the body is forced to deal with two forms of heat, metabolic and environmental.
It creates comp for blood flow, reducing performance and blood is taken away from working muscles for evaporation, reducing performance.
Increased sweating= decreased BP volume; cardiac drift occurs
Cardiac drift
Where HR increases to try to maintain cardiac output due to decreased SV, however Q is still reduced.
As result, skin blood flow reduced, less O2 sent to working muscles, placing extra strain on body to maintain exercise levels. Reducing blood flow to skin reduces sweating, increasing core temp, reducing performance
