Pe Flashcards
What is cardiovascular endurance?
The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles over a long period of time.
What is muscular endurance?
The ability of a muscle or muscle group to repeatedly contract without fatigue.
What is strength?
The ability to exert force against a resistance.
What is speed?
The rate at which someone can move or cover a distance in a period of time.
What is power?
The combination of strength and speed.
What is flexibility?
The range of motion around a joint.
What is agility?
The ability to change direction quickly whilst maintaining control.
What is balance?
The ability to maintain the body’s centre of mass above the base of support.
What is coordination?
The ability to use two or more body parts together smoothly and efficiently.
What is reaction time?
The time taken to respond to a stimulus.
What does SPORT stand for?
Specificity, Progression, Overload, Reversibility, Tedium.
What does FITT stand for?
Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type.
What is circuit training?
A series of exercises performed one after another with rest in between.
What is continuous training?
Training without rest at a steady pace for a prolonged time.
What is interval training?
Training that alternates periods of high intensity with periods of rest.
What is Fartlek training?
“Speed play” training that varies speed and terrain.
What is weight/resistance training?
Using weights or resistance to improve strength or muscular endurance.
What is plyometric training?
Explosive movements such as jumping to improve power.
What is high altitude training?
Training at a high altitude to improve aerobic endurance due to lower oxygen levels.
What is a joint?
A place where two or more bones meet.
What is a ligament?
Connects bone to bone and stabilises joints.
What is a tendon?
Connects muscle to bone.
What is a synovial joint?
A freely moveable joint.
What is an antagonistic muscle pair?
Muscles that work in opposition (e.g. biceps and triceps).
