PE Flashcards
How many strikes and how many to walk?
3 strikes to “strike out” or 4 balls to walk
How does the pitcher pitch? (Underhand or overhand)
Underhand with 2 hands on the ball
How do you pitch a strike?
To pitch a strike, the ball must hit the home plate or the batter must swing and miss.
What does beaned mean? What happens if a beaned occurs?
If the batter is hit by the ball or “beaned”, the batter will take the base.
Can you get the batter out by a foul? Describe what happens if there is a foul.
Fouls and foul tips are considered strikes, but you cannot get a batter “out” by a foul.
What does it mean to be tagged out?
When a base runner is tagged out by a fielder with the ball in hand/glove.
What is.a force out?
When a base runner is out by way of the fielders touching the advancing runner’s base with the ball in hand. Defensive players Can only use the force out when the base runner’s previous base is to be occupied by another runner (i.e. there is a runner on the base behind you so you have to run) or when the runner hits the ball and is taking his/her first base.
Can you run through first base? Why or why not?
At first base you are allowed to run through the base. This eliminates the need to slow down as you approach first. Once you make contact with the base you are considered safe or out, but can proceed with your momentum through the base.
What does tagging up mean? What happens during a tagging up?
Tagging up: If a fly ball is hit base runners must tag up and wait for the ball to be caught/touched before they take off to take the next base. If the base runner does not tag up, the base runner can be called out if the fielders return the ball to the base runner’s original position.
What are 3 things you can NOT do in softball?
No stealing bases
Runners can only advance one base on an over-throw
Runners must stay close to the line and cannot run out of bounds to avoid being tagged.
What are the 9 positions? What do they do?
Pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, third base, short stop, center field, left field, right field.
Where does each of the 9 positions stand? (search up an image of a baseball diomond)
