When people try to persuade others to vote for their party in an election
Canvassing
The area represented by one MP
Constituency
An electoral system where voters have one vote in their constituency and the candidate with the most vote wins
First Past the Post
An election for a new government. In the UK, these take place at least every five years
General Election
A meeting at which candidates in an election speak to the voters
Hustings
A form of democracy in which everyone votes on every decision in a referendum
Direct Democracy
A form of democracy in which people elect a representative to make decision for them
Representative Democracy
An electoral system in which people elect a representative to make a decision for them
Proportional Representation
MPs that are on the opposition and sit on the back benches in the House of Commons
Back Benchers
A government made of more than one party, it is formed when no one party has enough seats to form a government
Coalition
The MP elected to act as chairperson for debates in the House of Commons
Speaker
Makes laws. It is made up of the house of lords and house of commons
